This Victorian Gaol was built by Hansom (famous for the Hansom Cab) in 1829. The gaol features the only working tread wheel in Britain and a gibbet is still fixed to the wall. Beaumaris Gaol will live in your memory for a long time. Not for the faint hearted; call and see ghost pictures for yourself. It will give you a fascinating insight into the world of the prisoner in Victorian times 1830: William Griffith was hanged for the attempted murder of one of his two wives. 1840: Gaynor Jones was jailed for one month's hard labour for stealing a quart of milk. 1862: Richard Rowlands was hanged for the murder of his father in law. He went to his death pleading his innocence.

There was a gaol on the site as early as 1654. Architect, Joseph Turner submitted plans to include more cells and a chapel in January 1775. The erection of the new building is now the oldestsurviving on the site.There hav been many additions to the gaol , between the years 0803 - 1866. The building served as the county gaol until 1866 when the new four storey Pentonville style wing was added. In 1916 H.M. Prison Ruthin was closed. It was bought by Denbighshire County Council in 1925, who still own and maintain it today. The gaol is open to the public all year round, as part of Denbighshires heritage. William Hughes was the last man to be hung at Ruthin gaol. The execution took place at 08.00 hours on the 17th February 1903. Please see their website for further information.
